This is a theologically rich meditation on Jesus’s identity and sacrificial death, using John 10’s shepherd metaphor to explain what Good Friday means. The preacher moves thoughtfully from who Jesus is (God, human, good) through what he did (sacrificed himself as a substitute) to what he accomplished (seeking, saving, satisfying, securing his people). It rewards careful listening and opens up deep conversations about faith.

Worth knowing: The sermon discusses Jesus’s death and God’s wrath in theological terms; no graphic imagery, but the subject matter is weighty.

Talk about it together (5 questions)
  1. The preacher says Jesus is like a good shepherd in four ways he’s different from bad shepherds. Can you name those four bad types and what Jesus does instead?
  2. What does it mean that Jesus ‘laid down his life’ for his sheep? Why couldn’t someone else do this?
  3. The sermon talks about Jesus being both God and human at the same time. Why did he have to be both to be our good shepherd?
  4. Jesus promises in verse 27-28 that his sheep ‘will never perish’ and ‘no one will snatch them out of my hand.’ What does this promise mean for how you live as a Christian?
  5. How does understanding Jesus as our good shepherd change the way you think about his death on the cross?
